OtterBox MOT4-ATRIX-20-E4OTR Review by Brian L. (Waveland, MS USA)

I was looking for a good case to keep my new Motorola Atrix 4G safe, and at the time there weren't too many to choose from. I didn't have any experience with Otterbox's cases in the past, but I had read a lot about them so I decided to give them a try. Some reviews of the Impact case said that it was nice, but it collected a lot of lint and it wasn't always completely snug on the phone. The Defender case was said to be for more high-risk, heavy duty users of the phone that would be in an environment where it would be possible for the phone to be damaged. I was turned off by the Impact apparently being a lint magnet and not conforming to the phone well, and I definitely do not work or live in a high-risk area where my phone would need the kind of protection offered by the Defender. All that said, I decided the Commuter case would be best for my uses.

The case includes a rubber case that conforms to the phone itself, a hard plastic case that hugs the sides of the phone and covers the back of the phone, and a plastic screen protector. I had never used a screen protector before so I was a little concerned about installing it properly, but it was very easy to do - peel off the back of the protector, position it on the phone properly, peel off the front panel, and use the included installation card to move out any bubbles that form underneath. That's it. No more than 5 minutes to do, and for a first-time user of any type of screen protector at all, that seems pretty good. The protector itself also covers the four keys on the bottom of the front of the phone, and they still work just as well as they did without the protector. There is also a slit at the bottom of the protector that leaves the microphone exposed.

The case itself is very solid. It protects the phone from damage very well. The sides of the case that go over the top of the phone actually go over the outside edges of the screen protector, ensuring that only the minimum parts needed on the phone are still exposed. The front and rear facing cameras, power button, LED notification light, and front and rear speakers are all exposed so they can still be used, and I haven't had any trouble using the fingerprint scanner with the case installed. Rubber flaps that can be pushed back cover the headphone jack on the top and the USB/HDMI ports on the side. As for the volume buttons on the opposite side, the case includes rubber buttons that fit over them, so they are covered as well but still work just fine when you press on the rubber buttons.

I don't have any of the optional accessories that go with the Atrix, including the dock and laptop dock, so I unfortunately cannot speak for whether or not this case would have to be removed in order to use them. Given the bulk of the case though, I'm guessing it would have to be removed. If anyone can confirm this, it would be much appreciated.

As for the bad, there isn't much. Like the Impact case, the rubber portion of the Commuter case seems to collect a good bit of lint from your pocket, and it doesn't always like to come right off. Also, the case definitely adds some bulk to your phone, but this is mitigated for me because the Atrix is fairly light without any case on it. That said, the good far outweighs the bad with the Commuter, and I highly recommend it for anyone looking for extra protection for their Atrix.

OtterBox MOT4-ATRIX-20-E4OTR Review by M. Ali (Seattle, WA USA)

I bought this Atrix case from the AT&T store and initially love the durable and secure feel of it. After a month of use, I still find this case to be excellent for defense and durability. The only issues I've noted are:

(1) This case is a dust and dirt magnet. Keeping it in my pocket attracts quite a bit of the stuff. The reason this is a issue is that the dirt often gets into the many cubbie holes and crevices between the case and phone and may create marks on the phone itself, including the screen. I've had to take the case off every 2 days or so to clean out the dust and dirt underneath. My wife's iPhone Otterbox defender case doesn't have this issue (or to this extent).

(2) The silicone rubber exterior part of the case got pretty loose around the bottom and side quite a bit after less than 3 weeks of use, maybe due to the need to keep taking the case apart to remove dust and dirt. I keep having to adjust it to make sure it's fastend to the interior shell. I wish I could buy another silicone part, preferably in a different color.

(3) The included screen protector on the front case is not great. It suffers from dust problems as well and needs to be cleaned often.

(4) The size of the case precludes the phone from being used on the multiple available accessories avaialble for the Atrix 4G including the lapdock, the webtop entertainment kit, and the car kit.

Even with these issues, I still love the case and would buy it again because I tend to tough on my phones.
